CVHS 9th grade email update for November 14th, 2008
General Info:
- CVHS Magnet Open House: Carnegie Vanguard High School will
be hosting an open house on Saturday, November 15 from 4:00-6:30 p.m.
This will be a chance for us to let potential students/parents what a wonderful
school we have! Free pizza will be provided by the PTO, so we hope Carnegie
families will come out and help spread the word about this great school!
- Early Dismissal on Tuesday, November 25th. Thanksgiving break starts on
Wednesday, November 26th and students return to school on Monday, December
1st.
- RECYCLING: Please bring all paper recycling (we recycle paper, magazines,
phone books, junk mail, etc…) to school and either drop it in the green
and yellow dumpster in the back of the school or ask your child to bring it
to the dumpster or to Mrs. Matsu. In order to keep our wonderful recycling
dumpster, we have to hit our quota. Thanks for helping us.
- The Thespian Society will be performing their first play for the 2008-2009
school year. They will be putting on Alice in Wonderland.
The directorial choices for this play have married a dark Tim Burton-esque
theme to Louis Carroll’s original stories. Tickets are $7 presale and

- Mrs. Matsu is sponsoring a 12 day trip to Australia and New Zealand
during July 2009. This will be her 6th trip with students and her 3rd trip
with students to Australia . If you are interested in this trip please see

Students, Parents, and siblings are welcome to join us. Prices go up on October
8, 2008. So if you are interested, please let me know, or sign up to lock

From Mrs. Bibeau (Theatre):
- Neutral Monologue Assignment
- The class will nominate and vote to select one monologue which will be performed
by every student. The monologue must work for any gender or physical type.
- You will bring in a copy of your monologue, typed on 11 November. We will
read them as a class and vote on it at the end of class.
- Each actor will then create his/her own character and interpret the monologue
as he sees fit.
- The words you speak will be given to you.
- The character and imaginary world you create will be your own invention.

From Mr. Li (Geometry):
- Focusing on Centroid and Orthocenter, Inequalities in Triangles;
- 11-20 (Thursday) has a small quiz (20 Min.)
- 11-24, Monday, Review of Chapter 5;
- 11-25, Tuesday has chapter 5 Test.
From Mr. Barnes (Algebra I):
- We are starting Chapter 5 on Friday 11/14
- The project for cycle 2 will be assigned next week
- We will have our next test on Monday 11/24 (The Monday before Thanksgiving)
From Mr. Smith (Spanish I):
- Mini story production will continue in groups using a variety of strategies,
props, etc. An individual mini story will be due on Friday. Students will
be assessed for group and individual work.
From Mr. Falco (Spanish 2):
- Culture: They will continue the series: A Succinct History of Mexico
and have a quiz on Friday.
- Grammar: Preterite of regular verbs, demonstrative adjectives, and using
adjectives as nouns.
- Vocabulary: Articles of clothing; types of stores. They will have a quiz
on Monday.
- There will also be a song to accompany the chapter. A quiz on the song will
be given on Friday. Various activities will be done throughout the chapter
to reinforce reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
From Ms. Huffman (Latin):
- Latin 1 is consolidating the two past tenses, and will have the Stage 6
test midweek.
- Latin 2 is back to reading stories and discussing them in Latin, after our
grammar focus.

- First-year Art test on Thursday covering Paleolithic, Neolithic, and Near
Eastern art.
From Mr. Lamane and Ms. Terry (P.E.):
- Health class: Students should read chapter 11.
- Students do not have to work on the chapters they were assigned before.
However, they will receive a project to work on (at later notice)
