CVHS 9th grade email update for September 4th, 2009
General Info:
- RECYCLING: Please bring all paper recycling (we recycle paper, magazines,
phone books, junk mail, etc…) to school and either drop it in the
green and yellow dumpster in the back of the school or ask your child to
bring it to the dumpster or to Mrs. Matsu. In order to keep our wonderful
recycling dumpster, we have to hit our quota. Thanks for helping us. We
take catalogs and magazines!
- Mrs. Matsu is sponsoring two summer international trips. Both trips are
currently accepting students and parents.
- July 2010 – Costa
Rica (price goes up Oct 1, but you can sign up anytime)
- Summer 2011 – Japan
(The price will go up after September 3rd, so if you are interested,
please let her know)
- Unfortunately, the HISD parent portal for Gradespeed (the website where
you will be able to see your child’s grades) has been delayed until
September 28th. This is a district wide program and as soon as they tell
us it is working, we will let you know.
- Monday, September 7 is a Holiday !
From Mrs. Bibeau (Theatre):
- Monday: - Labor Day - No School
- Tuesday 9/8: students will work in groups to make a mask that shows the
emotion and struggle of one character in the scene (much like the Greeks
did). Students must bring their own paper (poster board, cardstock, or construction
paper).
- Wednesday 9/9: students will perform their scene. Props and costumes will
aid in performance. Quiz grade
- Thursday 9/10: Students will review as a class for test.
- Friday 9/11: Students will take written exam over Greek theatre and Oedipus
Rex (notes below)
- This entire project will count for one participation grade. Each student
is expected to fully participate for the entirety of the class.
From Ms. Moumni and Mr. Swenson (AP Human Geography):
- We will work on political maps & cover the Regions of:
- Europe and Russia
- America
- Africa
- Australia & the Pacific realm (certainly for the week after)
- They will have pop quizzes and or “Not Twice” assessments!
- On Tuesday the 8th of September their first Current Event Wall articles
are due!
- Their exam #1 will be on September 18th 2009.
From Ms. Bullis and Mr. Holloway (English I):
English I--Holloway
- Bring your copy of Great Expectations to class every day next
week. If you are unable to get a copy, please see me before school or during
lunch. You will have reading homework every night.
- Please bring me a ream of printing paper if you have not done so already.
- Kite Runner projects are due on Tuesday, September 8!
English - Bullis
- Kite Runner scrapbook project due – 9/8
- Vocabulary quiz – 9/18

From Mrs. Matsu and Ms. Alcoriza (Biology):
- Vitruvian Man lab – write two hypotheses for Tuesday
- Lab on Tuesday – due on Thursday
- Read pages 16 – 23 by Wednesday (reading quiz)
- Test on Monday, September 14th (covering safety, chapter 1, experimental
design, cancer warrior, vitruvian man, peanut lab)
- A review sheet for the lab will be distributed next week

From Mr. Li and Mr. Schenke (Geometry):
- Study Chapter 1.7 on Tuesday for Perimeter and Area,
- Assignment: # 1, 2, 4-10, 12-29, 42-46;
- Study Chapter 2.1 on Wednesday for Inductive reasoning,
- Assignment: # 1-14, 19-31;
- Review Chapter one on Thursday;
Chapter one Test on Friday.
From Mr. Barnes (Algebra I):
- HW due on Tuesday 9/8 (students received it in class on Friday)
- The HW due Wednesday 9/9 is a test review. Students will receive this
in class on Tuesday. Students should make sure they can work all problems
and bring any questions to class on Wednesday.
- Test on Thursday 9/10
From Mr. Beall (Spanish I & II):
- Spanish I will continue to work on the preliminary chapter of the book
next week (pgs. 12 - 23). There will be a quiz on Thursday or Friday over
this material. We will then begin Chap. 1 (pgs. 24- 29). Various homeworks
will be assigned to develop the knowledge learned in these pages. Each class
will decide what they would like to present for the Foreign Language Open
House on Sept. 25, and we will begin to practice for said presentation.
- Spanish I: will review the assigned literature from the summer reading
list and then there will be a quiz over those works on Thursday or Friday.
We will continue to work on the preliminary chapter and take a separate
quiz on it either Friday or Monday of the following week. Various homeworks
will be assigned to develop the knowledge learned in these pages. Each class
will decide what they would like to present for the Foreign Language Open
House on Sept. 25, and we will begin to practice for said presentation.
From Ms. Huffman (Latin):
- Latin 1 has the Chapter 2 packet, and are finishing up the Chapter 1 activities.
We are choosing projects [and Fall Festival roles] this week, and starting
rehearsals.
From Ms. Heno (French):
- French 1 will continue to learn greetings and salutations, the numbers
50 to 100, class room vocabulary, subject pronouns and actions, French culture.
- French 2 is reviewing grammar and vocabulary learned in French 1 and French
culture. They are also reviewing how to ask and answer questions, how to
express what they do, did, used to do and are going to do.
From Ms. Casperson (Debate):
- Students will continue to learn the fundamentals of public speaking techniques.
- CURRENT EVENT ASSIGNMENT: Due every Friday
Mr. Lamane and Ms. Terry (P.E.):
- Health: Test on Thursday 9/10 on chapter 2.
Students will receive a project on “evaluation of a health product/health
service” of their choice
- PE/FPF: We will continue on chapter 1 and 2 bring your notebooks.
