CVHS 9th grade email update for March 5th, 2010
General Info:
- News flash…AP tests are now encouraged and the
District is asking that all students sit for each exam. Therefore, Carnegie
students are expected, but not required to take each exam. The District
will pay for all exams as long as the student is enrolled in the course
or if they are a native speaker of French, Spanish, Chinese….
So, please encourage your child to take exams and ask them to return the
yellow registration form to Ms. Hernandez as soon as possible. We will extend
the due date to March 10. THANK YOU!
- Please monitor your child’s grades via PSconnect (Gradespeed). There
are notification settings that can be personalized within the program to
alert you to low or high grades. The link to the website can be found on
the HISD website: http://www.houstonisd.org/
- Mrs. Matsu is sponsoring two summer international trips. Both
trips are currently accepting students and parents. The day you sign
up locks in the price.

Ms. Bullis
- Students need to have their copy of Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt
Vonnegut and should immediately begin reading the novel. A reading response
journal will be distributed to the students and should be completed individually
while reading the novel.

- “Romeo and Juliet” essay is due on Thursday 3/11 (hard copy
at beginning of class)
- Students can also turn in the “Romeo and Juliet”
packet on Thursday 3/11 for extra credit points
- There will be a heavy focus on writing this week. It is very, very important
that your student is writing/working on their essay every night. This essay
is a major grade and will be the final grade of the cycle.
- Students need to get Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five.
We will begin reading it as soon as they return from Spring Break.

From Mr. Barnes (Algebra I):
- The cycle 3 project is due on Monday March 8 by 8:30AM (before 1st period).
Any projects turned in after 8:30AM will be considered late.
- The Chapter 9 test is on Friday, March 12.
From Mr. Beall (Spanish I & II):
- Span. I: will continue to study Chap. 7B. Various written and reading
exercises will be assigned from pages 349 - 363.
- Span. II: will continue to study Chap. 8A. Various written and reading
exercises will be assigned from pages 400 - 417.
From Ms. Huffman (Latin):
- On Monday and Tuesday, all Latin classes will review for the National
Latin Exam.
- The National Latin Exam will be administered to all Latin students during
Advocacy on Wednesday. You may not discuss the test in front of Magistra
until we return from Spring Break.
- Any late work will be accepted during class on Wednesday.
- On Thursday and Friday, with Magistra absent, all Latin classes will have
video content. Submit your notes both days for participation grades.
From Ms. Heno (French):
- French 1 and 2 will have Culture, Conversation and Computer next week.
From Ms. Casperson (Debate):
- Student Response Journal due every Friday.
From Ms. Harris (Communication Applications):
- Students will give presentations on the research they have been conducting.
The presentations will be a test grade and the last grade of the cycle.
Please make sure your student is rehearsing.

- Student ink wash drawings are now due at the beginning of class on Tuesday,
