CVHS 9th grade email update for September 25th, 2009
General Info:
- Mrs. Matsu is sponsoring two summer international trips. Both trips are
currently accepting students and parents.
- July 2010 – Costa
Rica (price goes up Oct 1, but you can sign up
anytime)
- Summer 2011 – Japan
- The PSAT will be given at Carnegie on Oct. 14, at 8:30 a.m. All 9th grades
students are highly encouraged to take the test. This is a great way to
prepare for the SAT. Students will receive a score report in December that
gives specific suggestions on how to improve academic skills. The cost is
$13.00. Students can pay their advocate between now and October 9. The Carnegie
PTO has generously volunteered to cover the cost for all 9th grade students
on Free or Reduced lunch. If parents have questions, e mail Mrs. Maxey at
emaxey@houstonisd.org.

- Wednesday – Pantomime test – performance-based

Ms. Moumni
- Students will have a test on Thursday October 1St on Chapter 1 of the
Human geography book.
- Current event due on Tuesday since Monday there is no school.
- Tuesday we will finish the lecture on chapter 1
- Wednesday will be a review day

From Ms. Bullis and Mr. Holloway (English I):
- Third and final spot check of the dialectical journal is 9/29.
- New vocabulary has been assigned and can be found on the class website,
www.freewebs.com/hbullis.
- Test over Great Expectations 10/9.
- Dialectical Journal due 10/12, originally assigned 9/9. This is a major
grade.
- Students need their copy of The Odyssey, the Fitzgerald translation,
by 10/15.
From Mrs. Matsu and Ms. Alcoriza (Biology):
- A lab was given out today that should be read over the weekend. The lab
will take place on Tuesday ( Matsu ) or Wednesday (Alcoriza).
- The biome brochure project (test grade) was introduced today. It is due
on Monday, October 12.
- Progress reports (for biology grade only) were given out today. Students
must get these signed and return them on Tuesday.
- Reminder: The next newspaper article write up is due Wednesday, October
7th. Students may do it anytime between now and then. Please type it if
possible!
- Next Biology test is planned for October 6th and 7th. (free response one
day and multiple choice the other day)

From Mr. Li and Mr. Schenke (Geometry):
- We will study Chapter 3.1 and 3.2 Tuesday to Wednesday,
Focusing on:
1. Identify Pairs of lines and angles;
2. Parallel lines and Transversals;
- Assignment:
3.1, # 1,2, 4-6, 8-10, 12-15, 16-22Even), 24-28, 34-42, 45,46,
3.2. # 1-3, 4-20(even) 22-34(even), 37-42;
- Review for 3.1-3.2 and PSAT practice on Thursday;

by 10/12)
From Mr. Barnes (Algebra I):
- We are starting unit 3 next week.
- Most of unit 3 deals with solving equations, and part of it also is a
review of ratio and proportion from middle school math.
- The majority of the homework for unit 3 will be from the text book.
- The next quiz will be on Friday 10/2.
From Mr. Beall (Spanish I & II):
- Spanish I will finish Chap. 1B (pgs. 64 - 71) and then take a quiz over
Chap. 1B on Wednesday. They will then begin Chap. 2A. Various and sundry
readings and written exercises will be assigned. They can expect a test
over Chap. 1A & 1B on Friday.
- Spanish II will finish Chap. 1A (pgs. 22 - 40). Various and sundry readings
and written exercises will be assigned.
From Ms. Huffman (Latin):
- With the Foreign Language Showcase safely behind us, Latin 1 will regroup,
recapitulate Chapter 1, and aim resolutely at making some progress in the
language as vs. the culture.
From Ms. Heno (French):
- French 1 is learning formation and usage of adjectives, more about telling
time, avoir and etre and more about the Francophone world.
- French 2 is reading le Petit Nicholas, learning when to use the
passé compose and imparfait, learning vocabulary for sports and cars
and preparing a skit.
From Ms. Casperson (Debate):
